Covering 40 square miles, Walt Disney World Resort is about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands. On more than 25,000 acres, Disney is the largest single-site employer in the United States, with 62,000 cast members. With a backdrop as large as Disney’s, communications challenges are bound to loom.

From on-property accidents which require quick, decisive and often 24-hour crisis communications, to the unveiling of a new ride or theme park, being responsible for all media relations and internal communications at Disney takes expertise, know-how, flexibility and savvy.

Mike Griffin serves as Vice President of Communications at Disney, where he is responsible for media relations and internal communications for the company. Mike previously spent 24 years working for the Orlando Sentinel, most recently as deputy editorial page editor. He also previously served as Tallahassee bureau chief, political editor, regional and state editor and city editor for the Sentinel.

Mike has trained reporters and editors on election coverage and campaign finance, conducted seminars on media relations for new government officials, managed press coverage for the 2002 gubernatorial debate, moderated television debates during the Orlando mayor’s election, and produced and appeared in news updates for Central Florida News 13.

He has received several awards for his work, including the 2002 National Scripps-Howard Literacy Award for the “Reading by 9” project and the 2003 Tribune Management Award for negotiating and planning gubernatorial debates. He holds a degree in journalism with a minor in political science from the University of Central Florida. This is one professional development seminar you don’t want to miss. Come listen and learn about communications tips and strategies we can all use, no matter how large or small the challenge.
